Designed by a student at the Edinburgh College of Art, the tartan incorporates red and yellow to symbolise blood, the liver, and pus—the traditional colours associated with Edinburgh Medical School. Purple lines commemorate the admission of women in 1869, while triple red lines represent the influence of the University of Padua and celebrate 300 years of scientific progress in Edinburgh.
